The children were talking to me about their school assemblies yesterday in the car on the way home from school.
On Mondays, a chap who I will call Padre comes in to talk to the children. He tells them stories about God, and religion, and not snapping each other’s heads off and spitting down the neck stump. That sort of thing.
He is involved in the school in lots of ways, and I have always understood that he is a priest, or on the way to being a priest.
Tallulah said:
‘Padre tells us stories every Monday. I like him, but the stories are a bit Goddy.’
I said:
‘Well, it is kind of in his job description, right?’
She said:
‘Why?’
I said:
‘Well, he’s a priest isn’t he?’
She said:
‘No! He works at Caterpillar.’
(Caterpillar, the company that makes the diggers etc, is near where we live. This story only works if you a) know this fact, and b) know that Oscar does not know this fact. Continue as you were.)
I said:
‘Oh! Well maybe he goes to Caterpillar and tells them Goddy stories there as well?’
Oscar interjected:
‘That would be a really hard job to do. He’d have to make himself extremely small to be able to tell caterpillars a story properly.’
That made me roar with laughter and reminded me of a conversation I had when my son was 3 and at nursery. The nursery was closed for an ‘inset’ day but my son was utterly convinced that it was an ‘insect’ day. He told me that the nursery would be closed because the ‘nursery ladies’ were going to dress up as insects for the day. Perhaps they did, who knows? He felt that his favourite member of staff would look good as a beetle and the head teacher would be a bumble bee. I never bothered to try and tell him otherwise as I thought it was a great idea and why spoil his fun?!
That is genius. I think they would much prefer an insect day as well. x
Perhaps the caterpillars turn into butterflies to get away from the Goddy stories . . .

Like Saul on the road to Damascus?
i love oscar’s attitude towards the whole idea… practical but coming to grip with the job at hand. on the other hand, given tallulah’s propensity for blessing things, i’m surprised she doesn’t take a more collegiate attitude towards Padre’s visits, exchanging theological philosophies and hints on the best outfits for blessing things.

I think she has gone off blessing things. It has gone very quiet on the blessings front recently.
