Bugger ‘em

Oscar and I were driving to see a friend yesterday.  He was very excited. He loves our friend dearly because she spoils him rotten.

He turned to me, and said very solemnly:

‘I love X, but I hope her little girl is not there.’

I said:

‘No. She will be at school, but why don’t you want her there? She always plays with you.’

To which he replied pompously, and as it happens entirely erroneously:

‘Yes. Well.  She does, but she is always buggering me.’

ahem.

I think he meant to say ‘bothering me.’

I hope so.

I really, really hope so.

  1. Ah bless him. My 3 yr old has issues with the word ‘blackcurrant’ – the ‘rra’ part is often dropped from it which leads to disapproving looks from anyone within earshot when she asks for juice.

  2. The mind boggles ;-)

  3. Or he could mean ‘bugging me’ (maybe he’s getting into americanisms in anticipation of a move westward)

    It does. All the time.

I didn’t think of that. Maybe. Or maybe he knew it was a bad word and just wanted to try it out! I suspect that this was the case truly.
